Remembrance at home
The Wonderful Window Challenge
The Poppy Appeal was founded to help those in need following a National crisis.
Right now, the Royal British Legion are helping those who are isolated from family, facing homelessness, struggling to feed their children, and are in financial crisis. At Eastleigh Borough Council we would like to invite you to show your support and display poppies in the windows of your home this year, to help create a field of poppies in our streets.
Here are some ideas of ways to get involved:
- Print a poppy from the official Royal British Legion website
- Crochet or knit poppies which can either be displayed in a vase or hung
- Follow our handy “How to” guide below to make your own poppies at home
Materials you will need
- Egg box
- Magazines / newspapers
- Scissors
- Glue
- Buttons (brown, black)
- Leaves found during a walk or collected from your garden
Instructions
1. Take the “bumpy” bits from egg boxes and cut into petal shapes
2. Find some red adverts, text or images in magazines/ leaflets and tear into small pieces
3. Decorate the egg cup pieces by sticking the torn up red paper to them using glue
4. Pop a button in middle of the bowl of the egg cup/ poppy as the centre (you can cut a circle of cardboard and colour in black if you don’t have a button)
5. Attach a leaf to the back
6. Make as many as you like – could make a whole field of poppies to display in your window – hang from the top using thread, add straws or sticks to display in a vase, or attach to cards
'Making a Poppy' Poem
Pop some poppies in the window,
To raise funds for good causes,
To symbolise remembrance
and support for the Armed forces
Start with an empty egg box
and cut it into bits,
Make petals red and add a leaf
Then hang it where it fits
If your neighbours do it too
we’ll make the streets look fine,
Take photos of the ones you spot
and share with us on Twitter @eastleighmayor
