Who is responsible for blocked drains or sewers
If there is an issue with blocked drainage you need to firstly establish where the problem is occurring as this will determine who is responsible for fixing it.
Drains
A drain is the pipe which takes waste water away from one property.
If a blockage or fault occurs on a single private drain serving one property only, it is the responsibility of the owner of the property to maintain, clear and repair as necessary.
Sewers
Collects water and waste from the drains of more than one property
If a blockage or fault occurs on public sewers i.e. shared private sewers and lateral drains, (the sections of sewer pipe or drain that are shared with another person’s property, or run through another person’s land), it is the responsibility of Southern Water to fix this issue.
