Artist Residency PhD Studentships
Eastleigh Borough Council, in collaboration with the University of Southampton and John Hansard Gallery, is pleased to offer a series of artist residencies at One Horton Heath (OHH) as PhD Studentships.
The first Studentship will run from September 2025 to August 2028, with the potential for two additional residencies to follow, subject to Local Government Reorganisation.

Artists interested in learning more about this exciting opportunity are invited to attend an in-person or online Information Session to meet the team and ask questions about the residency and application process.

📍 John Hansard Gallery – Tuesday 25 February 2025, 2–4pm
Online Information Session:
💻 Thursday 27 February 2025, 12:30–1:30pm

While we encourage meeting candidates in person, we understand this may not be possible for everyone.
Shortlisted applicants may also have the opportunity to visit One Horton Heath before the final selection process, though access to the site will depend on ongoing construction activity.
2025–2028 Residency/Studentship
The first residency will appoint an artist ahead of the completion of the first residential phase. This presents a unique opportunity to:
- Work closely with the OHH Development team
- Engage with residents of Fair Oak and Horton Heath
- Contribute to community facility planning
- Connect with the first residents moving onto the site
The appointed artist will undertake a PhD, supported and supervised by Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton.
Who We’re Looking For
We welcome applications from artists with:
✅ A background in visual arts or creative socially engaged practice
✅ Experience in co-production and working with communities
✅ An interest in environmental and sustainability themes
✅ A minimum 2:1 Honours degree or a Master’s degree
Application Process

- Candidates will submit a short proposal and CV for consideration
- Interviews: June–July 2025

About One Horton Heath
One Horton Heath is a new community development featuring 2,500 homes, a primary school, local centre, and employment spaces. The site, located southwest of Horton Heath and north of Hedge End, will evolve over the next decade through a series of phased developments.
