Bursledon to benefit from newly refurbished community kitchen
Refurbishment to the Pilands Wood Community Centre kitchen has been powered by Levelling Up to support the Bursledon community.
The space, previously only used to provide hot refreshments, is now a fully functional community kitchen. It will benefit the centre trustees, volunteers, as well as centre users as they proudly work on new ideas and projects to benefit local residents.
Belinda Murray, Chair of Trustees at PWCA said “Thank you for all you help with our kitchen refurbishment, it is going to make such a difference to the many families that use the centre. We are very excited to now be able to work towards other projects such as a ‘cook & eat’ projects and a very-much-wanted café”
The Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, Councillor Tonia Craig, said: “We are making this funding work hard, with lots of project underpinning improved health and wellbeing in the Borough this year. The refurbished kitchen will really make a difference to communities in south of the Borough. The food and education projects are needed in the Borough in response to cost-of-living pressures on the supermarket shop, cooking skills and food waste.”
Food education and production projects are pressing ahead across the Borough, powered by Levelling Up. They aim to help communities in targeted areas to grow their own food and learn how to prepare and cook fresh produce for better health and wellbeing.
The majority of funding will be implemented over the next year with cooking sessions for households aiming to improve nutrition, and make food go further. To underpin this and further reduce food waste and improve access to low-cost and affordable food, the fund will assist the network of foodbanks, community fridges and pantries.
The project is supported through the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
