Link road reaches halfway point
1.2 mile route demonstrates 'infrastructure' first approach
The One Horton Heath and Luddon Construction teams have celebrated reaching the halfway build point on the 1.2 mile link road that will see a new local travel route open between Hedge End and Fair Oak and connect the northern and southern gateways into the flagship development.
Completing in early summer 2024, the next phase of construction will see all surfacing works, street lighting, extensive landscaping and bridges installed.
More than 180,000 cubic metres of soil, enough to fill 72 Olympic swimming pools, has been excavated and reused within the site, saving 20,000 lorry journeys.
Part of the development’s 'infrastructure first' approach, new shared walking and cycling routes will be created along with new bus facilities. Importantly, the northern and southern gateways into the future development will be connected providing the future route for all construction traffic. The £11.7m scheme has already delivered local employment and skills opportunities.
Eastleigh Borough Council Leader, Councillor Keith House, said: "It’s great to be able to celebrate the halfway point of this new 1.2-mile road scheme. It is an excellent illustration of our ‘infrastructure first’ approach to project delivery, which also includes new walking and cycling routes."
