Bulky waste

Find out more about our bulky waste collection service for furniture and other large items

If your items are in good working condition (and have a sewn in red or blue fire label if upholstered) you could donate them to a local charity or reuse organisation. This is better for the environment, saving raw materials and is a sustainable way of reducing waste. These organisations offer a free furniture collection for items in good working condition:

If your items are not in good condition or suitable for reuse, you can take certain items to a household waste and recycling centre. If items are not accepted there, we offer a Bulky Waste Collection service for the following items:

We can collect:

  • Furniture (such as sofas, chairs and tables)*
  • Fridge freezers
  • Televisions
  • Washing machines
  • Carpets (underlay and carpet classed as two separate items)
  • Mattresses
  • Bathroom suites (bath, toilet, sinks), please note we do not collect cast iron baths.

* Please note recent changes to the way we collect sofas and other upholstered items.

We cannot collect:

  • DIY waste such as fixtures or fittings
  • Kitchen units/worktops, Tiles
  • Black bags, Miscellaneous waste

All items MUST be easily accessible and placed at the front of the property or at the point where the refuse is collected from on collection day eg for a communal property this might be the bin store.   Crews are unable to enter the property to collect items and no collections will be made from communal properties where there are a significant number of steps/staircases.

Please remember that if you pay someone to take away this kind of waste you must check that they are a registered waste carrier and make sure they give you a waste transfer note to state where the rubbish is being taken from and to.  You may be guilty of an offence under section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 if your waste has been found to be dumped, even if it was physically dumped by someone else. The duty applies to both businesses and residents. For more information please visit the Environment Agency website.

How to request a bulky waste collection:

Book below or by telephone: contact our customer service team (8:30am to 5pm Monday to Friday) on 023 8068 8440 and ask to arrange a bulky waste collection.

Using a private waste carrier

If you choose a different company to dispose of your waste, make sure they are licensed. Check the company's waste carrier licence number on the Environment Agency's register of waste carriers. If you do not do this and the company you hire fly-tips your waste, you will receive a fine and could be prosecuted.
